Dulag, Leyte — Two young basketball players from Dulag will take their game to Bangkok, Thailand, where they are set to represent Leyte in the World Youth Championship (WYC).
Terrence Romeo De Veyra and Prince Albert Tupaz, both students of Dulag National High School, are members of Leyte Pilipinas 5.0 – 14U, the provincial team competing in the international youth basketball tournament.
For the two players, the trip offers a chance to face teams from outside the country, gain experience and test their skills against a different level of competition.
Tupaz will wear jersey No. 29, while De Veyra joins him in carrying the name of their school and hometown to the tournament.
Dulag Mayor Jade Agullo congratulated the two athletes and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity.
“Continue to work hard, remain humble, respect your teammates and opponents, and always demonstrate discipline and sportsmanship,” Agullo said.
He reminded the players that success is not measured by wins alone, but also by the lessons they learn and the character they show on and off the court.
“Carry the name of Dulag with pride, represent Leyte with honor, and give your very best,” the mayor said.
Their participation also highlights the role of schools and local communities in developing young basketball players.
Behind every young athlete are hours of practice, schoolwork and the support of coaches and family. For some players, the cost of training, travel and joining competitions can also be a challenge.
De Veyra and Tupaz’s trip to Bangkok is a milestone, but giving young athletes more opportunities requires support beyond a single tournament.
For Dulag, their participation is also an opportunity to look at how local sports programs can help more young players improve their skills and compete at higher levels.
As they prepare for the games, De Veyra and Tupaz will carry their own ambitions, along with the hopes of their school and community.
The competition will bring tougher matchups and unfamiliar opponents, but the experience alone could give the two young players lessons they can bring home, regardless of the results.
For other aspiring basketball players in Dulag, their journey began where many basketball dreams do – on school courts and neighborhood playing grounds.
Now, the two young players have a chance to see how far their game can take them.
