Naval, Biliran — After months of limited access, motorists traveling between Biliran and Leyte can now cross the Biliran Bridge without vehicle-type restrictions, following the completion of repair works that restored the bridge’s original load capacity.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Biliran District Engineering Office announced that the bridge is now back to its 15-ton (15,000-kilogram) maximum allowable load capacity, allowing all types of vehicles to pass as long as they do not exceed the prescribed weight limit.

District Engineer Irwin Antonio said the lifting of restrictions came after the replacement of the bridge’s expansion joints, a major repair component that allowed the structure to return to its condition before the bridge-swaying incident on December 23, 2024.

For many residents, the reopening brings relief. The Biliran Bridge is more than just a structure—it is the province’s only road link to Leyte, serving as a daily route for commuters, traders, delivery vehicles, and emergency services moving between the two provinces.

“Restoring the bridge’s full capacity means easier movement for our people and smoother transport of goods and services,” DPWH-Biliran DEO said, while reminding motorists that safety remains a shared responsibility.

Although all vehicle types are now allowed to cross, motorists are still required to observe strict safety measures. Only one vehicle may pass through the bridge at a time, drivers must avoid shifting gears while crossing, and vehicles must maintain a speed of 15 to 20 kilometers per hour (KPH).

Antonio emphasized that following these guidelines is crucial to preserving the bridge’s condition and ensuring the safety of everyone who uses it.

With the repairs completed, DPWH-Biliran DEO appealed for the continued cooperation of all motorists and residents. The agency said that responsible use of the bridge will help maintain a safe and reliable connection between Biliran and Leyte for years to come.
