PALO, Leyte — While most people are advised to slow down, 73- year-old Culita C. Enguerra of Paranas, Samar seems to be doing the opposite. She challenges age by staying fit, competing, and inspiring others to lead a healthy lifestyle through sports.
On Sunday, January 25, the Nitro Pickleball Court in Palo, Leyte, was vibrant during the 1st Gov. Icot Petilla Pickleball Tournament, where Enguerra emerged as one of the most inspiring figures of the event. She used to be a lawn tennis player, but age has not hindered her from learning, adapting, and excelling in a new sport.
Enguerra didn’t just come from Paranas to compete; she also came to share her passion for wellness and movement with others. Her performance on the court reflected the healthy lifestyle she has been leading, which she believes is the reason for her great strength and energy at her age.
The tournament was organized by the Guinhangdan Palo Liberation Eagles Club, with the Provincial Government of Leyte under Governor Jericho Icot L. Petilla as the main sponsor. The tournament brought together various regions, but Enguerra’s calm demeanor and steady gameplay caught the audience’s attention.
Enguerra ‘s switch from lawn tennis to pickleball was a way to take better care of herself.
“Lawn tennis requires more power,’ she said.
“Pickleball is easier on the joints and bones, but it still keeps you moving and sweating. “
She sees the sport as a natural extension of her healthy lifestyle, which prioritizes regular exercise, physical activity, and social connections without risking injury.
In addition to competing, Enguerra also became a mentor. During the tournament, she coached her child and nephew, patiently teaching techniques and discussing strategies. Her involvement showcased how pickleball is becoming a multi-generational sport that family members of all ages can enjoy together.
Now a champion of active aging, Enguerra encourages her fellow seniors to try pickleball and incorporate it into their fitness routines.
“This game is ideal for families and groups of friends, ” she said. “It promotes energy and good health. “
As the games at the Nitro Pickleball Court concluded, one thing was clear: pickleball in Leyte is not just for young, competitive athletes but also for those committed to living a healthy and fulfilling life at any age.
By combining years of sports experience with a passion for healthy living, Culita C. Enguerra of Paranas, Samar remains in the spotlight, proving that an active lifestyle and competitive spirit have no age limit.
