CALBAYOG CITY, Samar — The Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) 2026 officially commenced in Baybay City, Leyte, on March 1, marking the beginning of one of the region’s highly anticipated sporting events.
Calbayog City sent a substantial delegation of 888 members, which included 570 athletes, coaches, officials, and support staff, all prepared to compete in various sports disciplines while proudly representing their city.
The opening ceremony in Baybay City was a lively and festive occasion that brought together student-athletes, school officials, and supporters from across Eastern Visayas.
Calbayog City, situated in the northwestern part of Samar Island and renowned as the “City of Waterfalls,” has established itself as a prominent sports and youth development center, showcasing a full contingent of student-athletes, coaches, and officials to demonstrate their talent and values.
Vice Mayor Rex Daguman emphasized that the city participation in EVRAA goes beyond mere competition.
“EVRAA is not just about winning medals; it is about shaping character,’ Daguman stated. “Preparation for this year’s games was meticulous, involving extensive coordination with DepEd, coaches, and school administrators to ensure that our athletes are mentally strong and physically prepared.’
The EVRAA Meet is the primary regional sports event in Eastern Visayas, uniting young athletes from Leyte, Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, and Biliran. It serves as a platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their skills and potentially advance to national competitions like the Palarong Pambansa, featuring a diverse range of sports such as athletics, swimming, basketball, gymnastics, table tennis, and other inclusive disciplines.
A key aspect of Calbayog’s strategy this year is focused on grassroots development. Vice Mayor Daguman highlighted initiatives to enhance talent identification at the barangay and elementary levels, ensuring that sports programs are sustainable and not just seasonal endeavors.
“We are aiming for comprehensive growth across all sports disciplines, not just focusing on individual stars,’ he explained.
The city’s long-term plans include upgrading sports facilities and enhancing training systems beyond EVRAA 2026.
Despite the competitive nature of the event, Calbayog maintains a “student-first” approach.
“ Education and sports should complement each other, not compete against each other,’ Daguman emphasized, underscoring the city’s commitment to prioritizing academic responsibilities for all participants.
The city has extended financial support, uniforms, transportation, and logistical assistance to the delegates, with medical teams and supervision ensuring the safety of the athletes.
Daguman described the young competitors as “ambassadors of Calbayog” and highlighted the incentives for medalists and coaches as a means to inspire the next generation of athletes.
For many athletes, EVRAA 2026 serves as a gateway to national recognition, scholarships, and potential participation in the Palarong Pambansa.
Daguman also called upon private partners to collaborate in supporting the city’s sports programs, emphasizing that development is a collective responsibility.
“To our athletes: Compete with courage, play with heart and represent Calbayog with pride. Remember, you are not just carrying your own name but also the reputation of our city. Whether you win or lose, uphold our city’s honor through your character,’ Daguman encouraged.
For Calbayog, EVRAA 2026 signifies more than just a sporting event—it is an investment in the future generation, molding disciplined athletes who will evolve into responsible and community-oriented individuals.
