BASEY, Samar — In the peaceful village of Barangay Guirang in Basey, Samar, a day of celebration turned into a moment of hope and compassion for the members of the Mamanwa Tribe and local residents.
To mark the 129th Founding Anniversary of the Philippine Army, the 8th Civil-Military Operations Battalion and the 63rd Infantry Battalion organized a community outreach program on March 14, 2026, providing essential services and support to the indigenous community.
Under the theme “Bawat Isa Magkatuwang sa Pagkalinga ng Pamayanan,” the event aimed to uplift and care for the Mamanwa families who face challenges in accessing health services and social support.
During the outreach program, residents received free medical and dental consultations and treatments, as well as essential medicines. A feeding program was also held to nourish the community members, and free haircuts were offered to residents, making a significant impact on many families.
For the children of the Mamanwa community, the outreach not only provided assistance but also joy. Games and recreational activities were organized, and children received bags and jackets that brought smiles and excitement throughout the day.
Beyond the services rendered, the initiative served as a testament to the Philippine Army’s commitment to supporting communities in need, particularly indigenous groups living in remote areas.
The success of the outreach program was made possible through the collaboration and support of various partner organizations and stakeholders, including the Municipality of Basey, LGU Tacloban City, Department of Health – Eastern Visayas, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Eastern Visayas Medical Center.
Support also came from civic and private organizations such as ACDI Multipurpose Cooperative, JCI Candahug Liberation, Philippine Army Finance Center Producers Integrated Cooperative, New Breed Guardians Brotherhood Incorporated, Armed Forces and Police Savings and Loan Association Inc., the Supreme Student Council, Leyte Normal University, International Care Ministries, Innocare Pharmacy, Elises Pharmacy, KNR Petron, Petron Tacloban Terminal, RENAGMEC Power Corporation, and private supporter Carlos M. Fernandez.
Through the collective efforts of soldiers, government agencies, civic groups, and volunteers, the outreach program delivered more than just medical services and supplies—it delivered hope.
For the Mamanwa community in Basey, the day served as a poignant reminder that they are not alone, and that compassion and unity can bring about meaningful change even in the most remote communities.
