TACLOBAN CITY — As Dagami gears up for one of its major annual celebrations, local police are urging the public to be vigilant, emphasizing that maintaining peace and order is a joint effort between authorities and the community.

Dagami, a 3rd-class municipality in Leyte with a population of approximately 36,000 according to the 2020 census, is renowned for its strong community bonds and lively cultural customs. The town marks its annual fiesta on May 27 in honor of its patron saint, Saint Joseph. The festivities include the Dinagamihan Festival, which showcases local heritage and features popular delicacies like binagol, moron, and sagmani—drawing crowds from nearby regions.

With an expected increase in visitors, the Dagami Police have ramped up security measures across the municipality. Patrolwoman Jorja Mae Mercader from the Police Community Relations Office stressed the importance of community participation, stating that “peace and security begin with awareness.” She encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly, noting that grassroots vigilance can significantly help prevent crime.

In line with this, Patrolwoman Ma. Fatima Gador emphasized that police efforts extend beyond enforcement. She explained that increased visibility operations aim to build trust and strengthen relationships with the community, ensuring that residents feel secure and confident in the presence of law enforcement.

Under the direct supervision of PCPT Rexel A. De Asis, Officer-in-Charge, PNP personnel have been actively conducting police presence and visibility operations in various barangays within their jurisdiction. This initiative is part of the Philippine National Police’s Enhanced Managing Police Operations Strategy and Anti-Criminality Campaign, both focused on deterring crime and maintaining peace.

A crucial aspect of the security plan is the establishment of checkpoints in strategic locations throughout Dagami. Authorities stated that these checkpoints are designed to prevent illegal activities, including the transportation of prohibited items, while monitoring the movement of individuals entering and leaving the town.

Gador also highlighted that these measures act as a strong deterrent against criminal elements, while providing reassurance to all citizens. Despite initial inconveniences that some may perceive with checkpoints, authorities maintain that they are vital for ensuring a safe and orderly celebration, particularly during large gatherings.

As the fiesta approaches, the Dagami police continue to urge residents to stay vigilant and proactive. They emphasize that effective crime prevention is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement but a collective effort that relies on cooperation, awareness, and trust within the community.
