Tacloban City — A 28-year-old pedicab driver was arrested after police allegedly found a .22-caliber pistol and suspected illegal drugs worth an estimated P340,000 during a traffic stop in Barangay 77, Marasbaras, Tacloban City, on October 3.

According to the initial police report, personnel of Tacloban City Police Station 1 flagged down the man in front of Robinsons Marasbaras at around 9:45 a.m. for allegedly driving a motorcycle without a helmet.

Police said they asked the driver to show his license. When he opened his sling bag to get his personal belongings, officers noticed a firearm inside.

The pistol, locally known as a “Senyorita,” was allegedly not covered by the required license and documents. The man was then arrested for a possible violation of Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

During a subsequent search, police said they found around 50 grams of suspected illegal drugs inside a small coin purse. The drugs were estimated to be worth P340,000. Officers also recovered about P7,000 in cash.

The suspect, a resident of San Jose, Tacloban City, is also being investigated for a possible violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Police are looking into where the firearm and suspected drugs came from and whether the suspect has links to the illegal drug trade.

He may face charges under RA 10591 and RA 9165, subject to the findings of the investigation and the determination of probable cause by the proper authorities.
