Basey, Samar – The Municipality of Basey has strengthened its public health initiatives by successfully hosting a combined cancer awareness and blood donation event on December 12, 2025. The event was attended by local elected officials, health workers, and volunteers. Titled ` Cervical Cancer Awareness through Screening and Blood Letting Activity cum 4th Quarter Barangay Health Workers/BNS Federation Meeting,” the initiative was organized by the Municipal Health Office and received support from Mayor Luz Chu-Ponferrada and the Department of Health (DOH).
A major focus of the event was promoting cervical cancer prevention. Residents received screenings and educational sessions to increase awareness about human papillomavirus (HPV), leading cause of cervical cancer. Health officials emphasized the importance of early detection and education to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer.
The event highlighted the crucial role of Barangay Health Workers (BHW) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) as primary advocates for health promotion and education in their communities. The BHW and BNS held their fourth quarterly meetings during the event, actively participating in discussions and information sharing to enhance their roles.
In addition to the awareness campaign, a blood donation drive was held to contribute to the local blood supply. The drive received enthusiastic participation from the community.
