CATBALOGAN CITY, SAMAR — In an inspiring display of compassion and professionalism, soldiers from the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division of the Philippine Army embarked on a challenging, multi-day mission to ensure a respectful burial for a fallen enemy combatant, all while battling the harsh conditions brought on by Typhoon Tino.

This operation followed an armed encounter on November 3, 2025, in the remote areas between Llorente and General MacArthur, Eastern Samar. The deceased, identified as Joel Bobonao—who also went by the names Pen and Jack—was affiliated with the Communist-NPA-Terrorist (CNT) group. While the initial engagement was a combat operation, the focus in the days that followed shifted entirely to honoring human dignity.

Facing relentless rains, swollen rivers, and perilous mountainous paths, soldiers from the 63rd Infantry Battalion carried Bobonao’s body on foot through the storm-ravaged countryside. This arduous journey spanned several days, but on November 7, 2025, the battalion successfully arranged for a proper burial in collaboration with the local government of Pinabacdao and the family of the deceased.

Major General Adonis Ariel G. Orio, Commander of the 8ID, emphasized the importance of this act. “The Philippine Army’s mission is to protect the people and the state,” he stated. “But that also means upholding humanity and compassion—even for those who once took up arms against the government.”

The General used this occasion to call for peace and reconciliation, encouraging those still involved in armed conflict to lay down their weapons and reintegrate into society. He stressed that the army’s doors remain open through initiatives like the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and the Amnesty Program, which are designed to assist former combatants in returning to their communities.
