CAN-AVID, Eastern Samar – A fire broke out at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of Can-avid, Eastern Samar, at approximately 6:10 PM this evening, January 4, 2026. The fire was located specifically in the plastic section building of the MRF, situated within the Municipal Hall compound in Barangay 04, Can-avid.

According to initial reports, the cause of the fire was a loose drop wire belonging to ESAMELCO (Eastern Samar Electric Cooperative) that fell onto the MRF building. The fallen wire ignited the plastic bottles stored inside the building, quickly causing a fire.

Responding swiftly to the emergency, firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Can-avid, Dolores, and Taft joined forces to combat the blaze. Their coordinated efforts proved successful, and at 7:40 PM, the BFP declared the incident as “fire out” and under control.

While the plastic section building of the MRF sustained damage, the quick response of the BFP prevented the fire from spreading to other structures and causing more widespread destruction. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and investigating the incident further.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of electrical safety and the need for regular inspections of power lines and electrical infrastructure, particularly in areas where flammable materials are stored.
