When Governor RV Evardone personally handed over a P50,000 cash incentive to 101-year-old Sinforosa “Nanay Posa” Abod Bagual of Quinapondan last April 23, the gesture was meant to celebrate her remarkable longevity and show the province’s appreciation for its elder citizens.
Instead, it sparked a flurry of questions on social media, with many asking: “Where is the other half of the P100,000 centenarian incentive?” The confusion is understandable – under national guidelines, centenarians are entitled to a P100,000 cash gift from the government.
So when news broke of a P50,000 award, it was only natural for people to wonder if the full amount was being withheld. But here’s the key point that got lost in the initial buzz: this P50,000 is not part of the national program – it is an additional incentive initiated entirely by the Eastern Samar provincial government. This mix-up highlights a critical lesson for local governments everywhere: even the most well-intentioned acts of public service can be overshadowed by poor communication.
While Governor Evardone and his team deserve praise for going above and beyond to support their elderly residents, providing extra help that is not required by law, the failure to clearly distinguish this provincial gift from the national benefit led to unnecessary confusion and even suspicion among the public.
Nanay Posa’s story itself is a joy to celebrate. Born in 1925, a mother of nine, and still active enough to take morning walks around her yard. She represents the resilience and wisdom that our centenarians bring to our communities. Her plan to use the money to enjoy her favorite treats like ice cream is a wonderful reminder that these incentives are not just about financial support, but about allowing our elders to savor life’s simple pleasures.
The provincial government’s decision to allocate funds for additional centenarian benefits speaks volumes about its commitment to honoring those who have lived through decades of change and contributed to building our province.
In a time when many local governments are struggling to meet basic needs, Eastern Samar’s choice to invest in its senior citizens is both commendable and heartwarming. But the social media backlash also underscores how important it is for officials to be proactive in explaining the details of their programs.
A simple note accompanying the announcement, clarifying that this P50,000 is in addition to the national P100,000 incentive, would have prevented the confusion and ensured that the focus remained on celebrating Nanay Posa and the province’s thoughtful gesture.
As taxpayers, we have every right to ask questions about how public funds are used. But we also have a responsibility to seek out complete information before drawing conclusions. In this case, once the facts were clarified, that this was an extra benefit from the province, many of the concerns faded away.
Moving forward, let us hope that this incident encourages more transparency and clear communication from our leaders. And let us also take a moment to celebrate Nanay Posa and all our centenarians, who remind us that a life well-lived is the greatest gift of all, and that honoring our elders is a mark of a caring community. Governor Evardone and the Eastern Samar provincial government have done something wonderful here. Let’s make sure that next time, the message is as clear as the intention behind it.
